After losing sales and market share in the mid-segment to rival Samsung in the past quarter, Apple may relaunch its 8GB version of the iPhone 4 in the Indian market.

According to reports, the iPhone 4 will be priced at around Rs.15,000 through buyback and EMI schemes compared with its old retail price of Rs.26,500.

Since Apple has stopped production of the iPhone 4 last September , they are likely to source unsold inventory from around the globe for the Indian market. Though, this cannot be independently verified. According to a senior executive working with a top electronic retail , the iPhone 4 8GB model was one of the three top selling models by unit sales.

"While there is still a latent demand for the iPhone 4 due to its attractive price in India, the model has lost favour in matured markets and hence it may not make sense for Apple to start fresh production since it follows economies of scale," Economic Times quotes the senior executive as saying.

Reports further claim Apple's two distributors Reddington and Ingram Micro in India are planning a relaunch of the iPhone 4 8GB so that Apple can take advantage of the Republic Day sales bump.

We have heard a lot of rumors about HTC building a smartphone running Windows Phone 8. NowWindowsPhoneBlogging has posted all the key specifications of the phone rumored as Harmony, which it claims to have been revealed by a company insider. The leaked details of the phone suggest that it could possibly be a Windows Phone 8 version of the HTC One as it will most likely come with One-like 4.7-inch display and other features.

Reportedly, the phone will come with a 4.7-inch LCD3 full HD display with 1080p resolution, as was seen on the One. It is likely to come with Windows Phone 8 GDR3 update, and might as well feature an UltraPixel camera, BoomSound and Beats Audio as well. There is no hint on the processor, though on the memory front it is believed to come with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. All of this sounds promising and indicates that this will be one of HTC’s premium phones for the year.

HTC is not only one brand, as recently even LG was reported to have a Windows Phone 8 smartphone in the pipeline.

As far as the launch date for HTC third Windows Phone 8 smartphone is concerned, it is reported to be unveiled in the October-November time frame.

Epic Trolling from Samsung

This morning more than 30 trucks filled with 5-cent coins arrived at Apple’s headquarters in California. Initially, the security company that protects the facility said the trucks were in the wrong place, but minutes later, Tim Cook (Apple CEO) received a call from Samsung CEO explaining that they will pay $1 billion dollars for the fine recently ruled against the South Korean company in this way.

The funny part is that the signed document does not specify a single payment method, so Samsung is entitled to send the creators of the iPhone their billion dollars in the way they deem best.

This dirty but genius geek troll play is a new headache to Apple executives as they will need to put in long hours counting all that money, to check if it is all there and to try to deposit it crossing fingers to hope a bank will accept all the coins.

Lee Kun-hee, Chairman of Samsung Electronics, told the media that his company is not going to be intimidated by a group of “geeks with style” and that if they want to play dirty, they also know how to do it.

The Delhi High Court has restrained Finnish mobile maker Nokia from selling or transferring its ownership rights in India relating to movable and immovable assets in an alleged tax evasion case.

A bench of justices Sanjiv Khanna and Sanjeev Sachdeva, while hearing a plea of Nokia India Pvt Ltd against the Income tax department's recent order attaching (freezing) its all 15 bank accounts, also asked the handset firm to inform the assessing officer two days in advance before repatriating any money abroad.

The bench also asked the company not to transfer dividend abroad without its permission.

"The petitioner (Nokia India) will not surrender the lease-hold rights or transfer the ownership rights in respect of any of the immovable asset transfer and the fixed asset to any third person. The petitioner will not transfer, sell or alienate movable plant or machinery located in the immovable properties mentioned in the... of the impugned order," the court said in a recent order.

"The petitioner before repatriating any money abroad will inform the assessing officer (AO) at least two working days in advance," the court said and gave liberty to the AO to approach it in case he finds the transfer of money "concerning or questionable".

In addition, the court said "no dividend will be transferred abroad without permission of the court till the next date of hearing" and posted the matter for November 12.

Granting minor relief to Nokia India, the court said "the petitioner will be entitled to receive debts-created receivables, loans and advances but the amount so received will be deposited in the bank accounts mention in Sub para...of the impugned order.

"The petitioner will be entitled to operate the bank accounts in normal course of business and will file monthly statement of bank accounts with the AO in hard copy as well as by sending details via e-mails," the court said.

The issue related to the Income Tax department's Rs 2,080 crore (Rs 20.8 billion) tax demand notice to the Finnish mobile firm.

The alleged tax evasion pertains to royalty payment made against supply of software by the company's parent company, which attracts a 10 per cent tax deduction under the Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) category.

Appearing for the IT department, counsel Sanjeev Sabharwal told the bench that since June 21, 2013 the situation has changed as Nokia India has repatriated Rs 3,500 crore (Rs 35 billion) to its parent company as dividend.

The lawyer argued Nokia officials and its legal representative, at a meeting with IT officials, have failed to provide any detail of US-based software firm Microsoft's offer to acquire a significant part of Nokia's devices and system's business.

"Further, they could not furnish any declaration whether Microsoft Corporation would bear and pay unpaid and outstanding liability of Nokia India Ltd,” the counsel told the court.

Last month, Microsoft had said it will acquire Nokia's handset business for 5.44 billion euros ($7.17 billion) in cash.

Commenting on the court order, a Nokia spokesperson said "late last week, the Delhi High Court ruled in Nokia's favour in a case where the Indian tax authorities froze some of Nokia's assets for potential claims that hadn't even been raised against the company yet. Nokia welcomes this court decision."

Nokia is now working closely with the tax authorities to ensure that the parties will find a comprehensive solution to the remaining open issues and discussions have been constructive, the spokesperson said.

"Contrary to speculation in the media, Nokia has sufficient assets in India to meet its tax obligations, details of which will be shared with the tax authorities to allay any concerns they may have. Given that negotiations are ongoing, Nokia will not comment further on this matter," the spokesperson said.

"Nokia reiterates that it operates with transparency in its business transactions and is committed to resolving its outstanding issues with Indian tax authorities in accordance with all applicable laws, while also ready to defend ourselves vigorously as needed. This resolution to fulfil all our obligations is part of our firm commitment to be a good corporate citizen."

Every inspiring comeback begins with someone falling way, way behind. This should provide some comfort for Microsoft (MSFT), which today unveiled the second generation of its Surface tablets at an event in New York. To wow a depressingly apathetic public, the company showed off new machines with a raft of improved specs, more-colorful screens, and faster software. There’s even a kickstand with better “lapability.”

Microsoft released a new Surface Pro, a $900 tablet aimed at professional users, and the more consumer-oriented Surface 2, priced at $450. The original Surface RT, thus far an embarrassing failure with shoppers, will remain available for $350. Microsoft says its new tablets are much faster and can hold a charge for much longer. For the Pro, the company claims a 75 percent improvement in battery life, while the Surface 2’s is touted as 25 percent better.

But Microsoft also appears to be convinced it can accessorize its way to success. The tech giant showed off seven new things you can snap onto the tablets, from a keyboard with its own 30-watt battery inside to … another keyboard that’s 1 millimeter thinner than its predecessor. There’s also a dock intended to turn the Surface Pro into a PC.

And for tablet enthusiasts who want a kickstand, Microsoft hasn’t overlooked you. The Surface has always prided itself on its kickstand, but previous versions put the tablet at the right angle for working at a desk. The new kickstand can also be moved to a second angle so it sits better in your lap.

Microsoft’s Panos Panay, a corporate vice president, was charged with sounding Monday’s rallying cry. He did an admirable job, telling reporters that 95 percent of the laptops they brought to the event were slower than the new Surface Pro, and showing how the tablets allow users to work in Excel and play Halo simultaneously. He even sent an adorable video message to his adorable young daughter.

“It’s better than I expected,” says Crawford Del Prete, IDC’s chief research officer. “I thought it would be the exact same thing. They’ve evolved slightly.”

Slight evolution might not cut it, given the situation Microsoft finds itself in. To review: Microsoft launched its first tablets last fall and went on to sell $853 million worth of them in fiscal 2013—less than the $898 million in additional sales and marketing costs the company reported spending to hawk the Surface and Windows 8. Over the summer, meanwhile, Microsoft cut the price of the RT and took a $900 million writedown on the new products. The Surface 2 will continue to use an operating system that isn’t fully compatible with Microsoft’s phone operating system, making it harder on developers who want to write programs that work on both devices.

Microsoft’s tablet troubles come at a time of opportunity, as the iPad’s grip on the market has loosened somewhat: Apple (AAPL) now sells about one-third of the tablets shipped worldwide, down from about 60 percent over the last year, according to IDC. But people aren’t choosing Surfaces instead, leaving Microsoft outside the ranks of the top five tablet manufacturers.

The company seems to be continuing its current strategy of hammering Apple by pointing out all the hardware features the iPad lacks. In one constantly circulated television ad, an iPad sitting next to a Surface delivers a fraught soliloquy in Siri’s voice as its inferiority is exposed: The iPad has no USB drive, no kickstand, no nifty cover-cum-keyboard, no heavily discounted price. The spot ends with the iPad desperately asking whether people still think it’s pretty.
